Building a SaaS Product: What Is Different from Ordinary Software
A common story: someone builds management software for their own business, a friend in the same trade wants it too, and the idea of selling it monthly is born. The software works. But it was written for one company, and turning it into a product for many is more than adding a signup page.
What a SaaS product needs that custom software does not
- Multi-tenancy: every customer's data kept strictly separate
- Plans and limits: what each package can and cannot do
- Recurring billing, renewals, failed payments and invoices
- Self-service onboarding, so a customer starts without calling you
- Your own admin view across all customers
- Roles and permissions inside each customer's account
The local billing question
Many Bangladeshi customers pay by bKash or Nagad and do not keep a card on file, so automatic monthly charging often is not possible. Plan for manual renewals, reminders before expiry and a grace period. Selling abroad is a separate setup with card payments.
Sell to ten customers before building for a thousand
The first version should serve one kind of customer well. Get ten of them paying. Their complaints will tell you what to build next far better than a feature list written in advance. Scaling problems are good problems, and they can be solved when they arrive.
What decides the cost
Plans, billing and usage limits; tenants, roles and permissions; and the reporting you and your customers need. We build SaaS products with the source code, servers and accounts in your name, and a working build in your hands every week.
