How Long Does Software Actually Take to Build?
7 Apr 2026 6 min read
"Can you finish it this month?" usually means the client is counting coding days only. Coding is often the most predictable part of the schedule. Everything around it is what slips.
Rough shapes, not promises
- Brochure website: 2–4 weeks
- E-commerce with payments and delivery: 6–12 weeks
- Management system (POS, school, clinic): 3–6 months
- Mobile app with a backend: 3–5 months
Where the time actually goes
Waiting for a decision on how discounts work. Waiting for product photos and descriptions. Waiting for the bank to approve the payment gateway. Waiting for staff to be free for training. None of these are development, and all of them are on the critical path.
How to actually go faster
Give one person authority to decide. Prepare content before it's asked for. Start the payment gateway paperwork on day one. And cut scope rather than compressing testing — the second option only moves the delay past launch, where it costs more.
