Hiring a Dedicated Developer or Team: When It Makes Sense
Some companies already have a product and a small team, and the work is more than that team can finish. Hiring takes months. Giving the whole thing to an outside agency means losing touch with your own code. A dedicated developer sits between those two options.
How it differs from a project
In a fixed-price project you buy a result: this scope, this price, this date. With a dedicated team you buy capacity by the month. The developers work only on your product, inside your repository, your task board and your review process. You keep the backlog and decide the priorities.
When it fits
- A live product with a steady flow of features and fixes
- A scope that changes too often to fix in a contract
- A skill your team lacks for a few months, such as mobile or DevOps
- You have someone technical who can direct the work
When it does not
If you need one website with a clear list of features, a fixed quote is cheaper and simpler. And if nobody on your side can set priorities, a dedicated team will sit waiting for decisions while you pay for the month.
Keeping control
- Code stays in your repository from day one
- An NDA and a written IP assignment before work begins
- Access limited to what the work needs
- Weekly written notes: what shipped and what slipped
- A monthly agreement you can scale up, scale down or stop with notice
